Interest rate vs. APR
The interest rate sets your payment. The APR adds the origination fee, which lenders usually subtract from the money you receive, so you pay interest on cash you never get. When comparing offers, compare APRs. A loan at 11% with a 6% fee can cost more than one at 13% with no fee.
Typical rates
Personal loan APRs in the US range from about 7% for excellent credit to 36% for fair or poor credit. Credit unions often charge less and rarely add origination fees.
