What is a good debt-to-income ratio?

36% or less is considered healthy and qualifies for the best rates. 37% to 43% is acceptable for most mortgages, and 43% is the traditional limit for a qualified mortgage. 44% to 49% is possible with some programs, such as FHA loans with strong credit or reserves. 50% and above makes most loans hard to get.

What counts as debt

Count required monthly payments: housing, car loans, student loans, minimum card payments, personal loans, alimony and child support. Utilities, groceries, phone bills and insurance premiums are not included. Use income before taxes.
